Download Instructions and Help
These instructions help you run the program
and enable an icon for the program on your desktop.
There are two sets of instructions,
one for Windows 95 and Up,
and one for the much older Windows 3.X.

When you download a program or file, you have three choices. First, you can run it (or view it) temporarily without saving it to your system. When you click on the download link, you are asked whether you want to "Run this program from its current location" or "Save this program to disk.". If you choose the first option, it will not be permanently placed on your system, you will get to see the program and try it, but if you like it, you'll need to download it again, choosing the second option, "Save this program to disk".
If you select the second option, save to your disk, the program is yours, to run at any time. But you have two further choices about
how
to run it.
You can quickly setup an icon on the screen desktop, letting you conveniently run the program, or you can use the "File Run" command each time to start the program. The latter might be the best choice if you decide to put the program on a floppy disk to carry with you and use on other systems.
There are two sections of the complete instructions that follow, one for
Windows 95 and Up
and one for
Windows 3.X
Windows 95 and Up Instructions
First, if you are going to save the program, you need to decide where to put it. You can choose to put it in a new folder or an existing folder. For now, let's assume you have (or create) a folder called "utility".
Searching for and locating the file:
If you have already downloaded the file and don't know where it is, you can locate it using the following method. Press the "Start" button, then "Find", then "Files and Folders". In the "Named:" box, enter the name of the program you want to find, such as, "dottest.exe", then in the "Look in:" box, enter "c:\". Next, click the box "Include subfolders", and click the "OK" button.
When it finds the program and location, write it down carefully, such as, "C:\UTLITY\DOTTEST.EXE". You will need it.
Running the program:
Click on the Start button, click on "Run", enter the program's name and it's location, such as, "C:\UTLITY\DOTTEST.EXE", then click the "OK" button.
Try the program and see if you want to keep it.
If you want to have the program install a shortcut icon on your desktop, select "Help" on the program's menu bar, then select "Install Shortcut Icons".
The program puts an shortcut icon on the desktop and adds a folder to the Start Menu and adds an icon there as well. Either of these shortcut icons can be removed manually, or select "Help" and select "UnInstall Shortcut Icons" to have the program remove them.
Removing the program:
Later, should you decide you don't want the program, it's a two-step process to eliminate the shortcut icons and the program from your system.
First, eliminate the shortcut icons, if you installed them. Select "Help" on the main menu bar, then select "UnInstall Shortcut Icons".
To remove the actual program from your hard drive, use the File Search method described earlier to find the program. Once found, highlight the program, click FILE/DELETE, and click the "YES" button. Now the file is no longer on your hard drive.

Windows 3.X Instructions
In these instructions, the request for you to "click on FILE/NEW" means to move the mouse pointer over the word FILE in the bar across the top of the screen. Now when you click on the LEFT mouse button, a menu drops down with several choices on it and NEW is the first choice down. Move the pointer down to NEW and click on it. "FILE/NEW" was just a much easier way to say it.
Also when instructed to enter "test", don't enter the quotes!
First, if you are going to save the program, you need to decide where to put it. You can choose to put it in a new folder or an existing folder. For now, let's assume you have (or create) a folder called "utility".
Searching for and locating the file:
If you have downloaded the file and don't know where it is, you can locate it using the following method. In your MAIN group you have the FILE MANAGER program. Start it, then select FILE/SEARCH. In the "Search For:" box, enter the name of the program you want to find, such as, "dottest.exe", then in the "Start From:" box, enter "c:\". Next, click the box "Search All Subdirectories", and click the "OK" button.
When it finds the program and location, write it down carefully, such as, "C:\UTLITY\DOTTEST.EXE". You will need it.
Running the program:
There are two ways to run the program, the first is less convenient, but a good way to try the program to see if you want it. The other method puts an icon on your Window's desktop for convenience.
Method 1 - click on FILE/RUN, enter the program and it's location, such as, "C:\UTLITY\DOTTEST.EXE", then click the "OK" button.
Method 2 - (installs an icon) On your Window's screen, choose which group you want the program to appear in and open it. "ACCESSORIES" is a typical choice. Notice the group has
nothing
to do with the
folder
where the program is located. Once the chosen group is open, click FILE/NEW, then select "Program Item", and click the "OK" button. In the "Description" box, enter any name
you
want to appear on the Windows screen, such as, "Dottest". In the "Command Line" box, enter the program and it's location, "C:\UTLITY\DOTTEST.EXE". Now click the "Change Icon" button, and the correct icon will be highlighted, so click the "OK" button. Finally, click the next "OK" button and the program's icon will be in your chosen group, ready to click when you want to run the program!
Removing the program:
Later, should you decide you don't want the program, it's a two-step process to eliminate the icon and the program from your system.
First, eliminate the icon, if you installed it. Select the group where you put the icon, select the icon, press the "Delete" key, then click the "Yes" button and the icon is history.
